Suzhou Embroidery Center

suzhou embroidery research institute

The China Suzhou embroidery Art Museum and the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute – today’s Suzhou embroidery center – look like Eastern palaces of the arts. On display are embroidered quilts of the Han Dynasty, scripture wrappers of the Song Dynasty, embroidery by young women of the wealthy Han family of the Ming Dynasty, imperial robes of the Qing Dynasty, an embroidered garment of Song Ching Ling’s mother, and modern Suzhou embroidery including Kitten, Goldfish, Vincent Van Gogh’s Self-portrait, and Claude Monet’s Water Lilies.

In the center, visitors can also see needles flashing in the hands of the embroidery artists, the colored threads as they take shape on the fine gauze, revealing the lovely scenes of the river region south of the Yangtze River, dancing cranes, majestic mountains and rivers, Suzhou gardens, and portraits of eminent personages of ancient and modern times. The embroidery artists; works are visible. What can’t be seen are the years and painstaking labor that went into the embroideries. It is these embroidery artists who have continued to improve the quality of the ancient art of embroidery and helped to raise its place in the national culture and the world.
