The embroidery artists in Guangdong used strands of peacock feathers as thread to embroider clothes with dazzling colors. They also used strands of horse trails to embroider the outlines, which highlighted the designs. The schools of Guangdong embroidery and Chaozhou embroidery have different styles. In the last 200-300 years, many women in Chaozhou and Shantou were engaged in weaving and needlework. When a girl reached the age of 11 or 12, her trousseau – which included many fine examples of embroidery – was already being assembled by her mother.
In there areas, there were members of every family who were good at needlework. Most of the workers engaged in Guangdong embroidery were born in Guangzhou or Chaozhou. The Chaozhou embroiderers were the more skilled, and both men and women produced the work. This was rarely seen in other parts of China. Chaozhou embroideries include pieces done on wool, pieces with gold and silver embellishments, pieces that combined gold and wool, and pieces made with cotton thread. Each form has its own characteristics. The representative work of this form is All Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix.
