There are 18 different stitches in Suzhou embroidery. Below is the introduction of the seventh stitch, shi stitch
18 - 7 shi-stitch Stitch
The word shi means adding another stitch above a previous stitch or stitches. As the word implies, the embroidery is done by combing more layer of lines, but the layer should not overlap. Therefore, when the first layer of lines is embroidered, the stitches must be loose (fig. a), the space between two adjacent stitches depends on the complexity of the shading; the space is usually two stitches. The work requires embroidery be done layer by layer to produce color gradations (fig. b).
