Silk Hand Embroidered Japanese Prints

Woodblock printing in Japan is a technique best known for its use in the ukiyo-e artistic genre; however, it was also used very widely for printing books in the same period. Woodblock printing had been used in China for centuries to print books, long before the advent of movable type, but was only widely adopted in Japan surprisingly late, during the Edo period (1603-1867). The technique is essentially the same as that which is called woodcut in Western printmaking.

Su silk hand embroidery in Suzhou China is a unique art form to paint with needle and silk threads. The embroidery pictures are entirely hand embroidered with silk threads. The embroidery artist in Suzhou split one full silk strand into many thinner silk threads. They mix the the silk threads so well that the embroidery is very smooth and looks like a photograph.

Silk embroidered Japanese prints are an experiment that Su Embroidery Studio (SES) makes to combine the these two unique arts. Below is a silk hand embroidery work made from a Japanese woodblock print by a skilled embroidery artist named Zhang Jianying in Suzhou.
