Districts around the major gardens and temples teen with silk shops and outdoor markets in Suzhou. Suzhou's long history of wealth and culture has encouraged a tradition of elegant and finely worked craft objects. One of the best known is double-sided embroidery, where two designs are carefully stitched on both sides of a sheet of silk. The city is also famous for its finely latticed sandalwood fans. Both are available at the Suzhou Arts and Crafts Museum. The area outside the wet gate of Master f the Nets Garden has dozens of small stalls selling curious and inexpensive but interesting souvenirs.
