Hair embroidery is a traditional art practiced in many places in China. As the name indicates, hair embroidery refers to embroidery where human hair is used as a thread instead of other materials. Since Chinese people generally have black hair, hair embroidery is also called "Moxiu" (black embroidery).
Though silk embroidery is the main form of Suzhou embroidery, hair embroidery is also made in Suzhou. Instead of using silk threads, the embroidery artists in Suzhou use hair to make the embroidery work. They make us of natural color differences of black, white, grey, yellow and brown hair as well as the characteristics of fineness, softness, luster and shine. Suzhou hair embroidery was first used to represent designs of calligraphy, pavilions, figures, flowers and birds. The hair embroidery works are vivid and refined, and have a distinctive artistic style.
