Chen Hongying learned embroidery from the well-known embroidery master Wang Zushi. She is especially good at embroidering portraits, animals and landscapes. Her embroidery work Golden Monkey won the gold medal at the 7th National Exhibition of Works by Masters of Arts and Crafts.

On 16th of June 2012, her embroidery painting Two Deer flew in space as part of the décor of the Shenzhou-9 craft.

The embroidery is 30 centimeters long and 42 centimeters wide, and it features a design of two deer standing among mountains. Chen Hongying adapted it from a painting by the well-known artist Liu Kuiling. In Chinese, the pronunciation of “deer” is the same as the pronunciation of “happiness.”

The embroidery painting Two Deer used more than 100 colors of silk threads, and it took Chen Hongying more than four months to complete the embroidery.
